MOTS-c is a short 16-amino-acid peptide (sequence MRWQEMGYIFYPRKLR). Remarkably, it is encoded within the mitochondrial genome, inside the 12S ribosomal RNA — a region not previously known to produce peptides.

It belongs to the family of mitochondrial-derived peptides (MDPs).

A recent discovery

MDPs are a recently identified class; MOTS-c is among the most studied. Its production is reported to rise with physical exercise, which is why the literature describes it as an 'exercise mimetic'.
